Why it matters
FTL: Faster Than Light shows space combat from inside a ship. The screen displays compartments, crew and systems sharing a limited power supply. An impact can damage shields, start a fire or leave a room without air. Your task changes during battle: decide who keeps operating equipment and who runs to save the ship.
Pausing lets you stop the action and issue orders. Tension comes from conflicting needs: boost the engines to escape, keep weapons powered or support the defences. Outside combat, you choose routes, spend fuel and respond to text events. A pursuing fleet prevents endless resource gathering in one sector.
In its postmortem, Subset Games explained the initial goal through the role of a captain managing both overall strategy and people's actions. Losing the ship ends the journey, and a new one begins with a different sequence of events. This creates an expedition story through decisions and emergencies: what matters is not only victory, but how the crew survived the previous danger.
