Why it matters

XCOM: Enemy Unknown connects two scales of responsibility. On the battlefield, the commander leads a small squad through cover, chooses positions and assesses hit probabilities. Between missions, they build a base, allocate money, research technology and decide which countries to help. Success in one layer supplies the other, and losing an experienced soldier matters beyond a single battle.

Firaxis reimagined the 1994 game, reducing the squad to six soldiers and replacing the old time-unit system. This made each order more prominent: movement, shooting or overwatch consumes a limited part of a turn. Cover can still be destroyed, and a high hit probability leaves room for a miss.

Clear orders and irreversible losses create the campaign's personal stories. A soldier gains experience, a specialisation and new equipment without protection from narrative necessity. The optional Ironman mode strengthens this connection by limiting the campaign to one save. The commander gradually learns to assess risks to the squad, the base and Earth's entire defence programme together.
