Why it matters
Larian took the fifth edition of the tabletop Dungeons & Dragons rules and brought them to the computer without smoothing them over. Combat is turn-based, actions are allotted by points, and the outcome of almost any act is decided by a die roll shown on screen together with all its modifiers: you can see what adds up, what gets in the way and what was missing. A failure is no reason to reload. A failed check turns the scene, and the conversation continues along a different course.
The rules apply to the surroundings too. Water conducts a shock, spilled oil burns, high ground gives an advantage, an enemy can be pushed off a cliff or have a barrel thrown at them, so preparing the terrain often counts for more than the choice of ability. The party rests to get its spells back, and the personal conversations happen at the camp as well. You can play together, up to four people, each leading their own hero and free to go off in another direction, which is why a scene is often played out with just one participant. For several years the game was sold in early access, where only the first act was open; that is where the world's reactions to the players' antics were collected, and these were later extended to the end of the campaign.
