Why it matters

Psychonauts makes a character's inner world into a place you can walk through. Young Raz arrives at a camp for people with psychic abilities and learns to enter other minds. Outside, you talk to people and explore the camp; inside, you enter levels with their own architecture and rules. Levitation, telekinesis and other powers help you jump, solve problems and fight. Each place's distinctive character, however, comes above all from the person whose mind it represents.

In suspicious Boyd's world, an ordinary suburb twists into a network of roads above empty space. Surveillance becomes part of the scenery, while deliberately absurd agents turn distrust into a gameplay problem. Other minds change the scale, genre imagery and way you read the space. Even collectibles acquire meaning: emotional baggage appears as suitcases, while memory vaults reveal fragments of the past. The platformer thus tells stories about people through more than dialogue. Character is expressed in a level's construction, the obstacles it presents and what the player must notice to progress.
