Why it matters

A game splits into two different activities. On the world map the hero moves on movement points, gathers resources, captures mines and picks up artifacts along the way. When two armies meet, the action moves to a separate field of hexes, where the units take turns according to their speed. The hero doesn't step onto this field: he stands at the edge and once per turn casts a spell or uses a skill. Because of this, the hero's development and the makeup of the army remain separate resources that have to be spent with care.

Eight town types give eight lines of creatures, each with its own upgrade, and construction depends on seven resources at once, four of which are rare. The calculation never stops: whether to take the sulfur mine now or finish the dwelling. A map editor came in the box, so scenarios kept appearing many years after release, made by the people who played it.
